We’re thrilled to announce that Northbrook’s All-In Composting program officially begins Wednesday, May 7! This new service allows residents with LRS waste collection to combine yard waste and food scraps in a single compost cart for year-round weekly pickup.
Through this program, the Village of Northbrook and LRS are making it easier than ever to reduce landfill waste, cut methane emissions, and return valuable nutrients to our soil through composting. Participants use a 35-gallon cart with a yellow lid for their organic materials, which will be collected each Wednesday alongside regular yard waste service.
As part of the Village’s launch video, our very own Go Green Northbrook president shares how he composts at home using the freezer method — storing food scraps in a freezer bin to minimize odor and mess, then transferring them to the outdoor compost cart when full. It’s a simple, effective habit that works in many households.
To learn more about what’s accepted, how the service works, and why composting matters, visit the Village’s Recycling & Refuse Services page or watch the launch video here.
Let’s go All In on composting, Northbrook — and help make our community more sustainable, one banana peel at a time.
