2025 Composting Information

Northbrook will now have opt-in composting coming soon in May 2025. Bins are expected to arrive at the end of April. For more information on the program’s rollout, visit the Village of Northbrook’s refuse, composting and recycling resource webpage.

Need a quick reference on what is acceptable to put into composting bins vs not? Read on below.

Acceptable Items include:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Shells and bones
  • Meat, fish & dairy
  • Pasta and rice
  • Eggshells, egg cartons and nutshells
  • Coffee grounds and filters, tea bags
  • Paper bags, paper towels and newspaper
  • Uncoated paper plates, napkins, and pizza boxes
  • Plants and trimmings, cut flowers, leaves, grass, branches, house plants, flower bouquets,
  • BPI compostable Certified bags

Unacceptable items include:

  • Animal waste and pet litter
  • non-BPI Biodegradable plastic (bags, utensils, cups, and straws that are NOT BPI compostable)
  • Diapers, wipes, and bath tissue
  • NO Plastic bags
  • Plastic-coated paper cups and plates
  • Plastic containers and trays
  • Paper ice cream, milk, and juice cartons
  • Rocks, bricks and concrete
  • Rubber bands and twist ties
  • Styrofoam
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Wood
